Graduating From Paper Trading to Real Trading

The move from paper trading, or a demo account, to trading with real dollars will happen at some point in your trading career.

You will notice some profound changes and you need to be prepared for them.

The Biggest Difference

First of all, if you are not making money trading a demo account, there is no reason to expect you will be profitable trading real money. Stick to demo trading until you consistently show profits.

The biggest difference between trading your hard earned cash and a demo account is going to be your emotions. You will find you can think with more clarity when paper trading, as you really aren't worried about losing real money.

When your money is on the table, new traders tend to make poor decisions. They will let losing trades run rather than take a loss and this is the downfall of most trading accounts.

You need to protect your capital and live to trade another day. Things aren't always going to unfold as you would like. There will be losses. Prepare yourself to take a little pain (loss) and your chances of success increase.

Start Small

One way to help ease the emotional load of moving to trading real money is to start with very small trades. Once you have strung together some winning trades and your account is in the black, slowly increase your trade size.

Gradually increasing the amount of your trades will allow you to build confidence in your ability to handle the stress of actual trading. Only move forward as your profits grow, but always watch you don't exceed safe margin limits with your trades.

A Great Resource

I mention on this website about a very helpful Ebook that I still turn to often, and I purchased it more than four years ago!

If you are looking for guidance Bird Watching in Lion Country has a great plan that helps traders, new and old, move to greater profits with their trading.

It's 236 pages help explain the emotional process traders will encounter as they start to trade real dollars. It will be one of your best investments on the road to trading success.

Wishing You Success,
David Stevenson.
